A loud whistle they are never allowed to remove is number one. If they get lost it is the best way to signal and also if the get hurt too.

Speaking of safety right now is the perfect chance to do a little safety class with them. You hear of so many kids getting lost. This site has a nice little presentation on Child camping safety
http://www.theozarks.com/Children.htm
As everyone here has said, plenty of wipes I suggest lots Clorox wipes too. When gross things happen and you know they will with kids, you will be very thankful you had them!
I take a light up Frisbee for my kids when we camp. And a flash light for each kid. (we have 4), it gets dark alot earlier than they want to go to bed. This gives then something to do.
Flashlights are also handy when making trips to the restroom, for making shadow puppets on tent walls, and for reading before bed.
http://frontiersurvival.com/cat--Kids-...
For me getting semi clean is a must if your not camping near a public shower area. I would bring a solar shower, or if not that Self Heating wash clothes.
I would say a toilet is a must also. I like WAG bags they are biodegradable and have a power in the already that will gel any liquid and deodorize smells.
You could use then on the little fold up port a pottys or even in a bucket.

I guess it depends on how small? I'm guessing 3-5 years...
Extra TP
Extra Paper Towel
S'more supplies
Rainy day activaties (board games, picture books, crayons/coloring books....etc)
Sidewalk chalk (incase your campground has some safe pavement)
Bug collecting kit (ie magnifying glass, screen cages, yogurt containers with the clear plastic lids, butterfly net....)
Sting/bite stick (for instand bug bite relief)
Fun snacks non-sticky snacks (like trail-mix)
Wet-wipes.
Plant/flower/bird/star identification books (so you can teach them cool stuff)
Patience!

I have camped with kids all my life, from 6 months old, on up. Bring warm sleeping clothes like blanket sleepers and get a good sleeping bag, not the ones they use for sleeping at a friends house in the living room, but something warmer. Don't bring too many toys at all except bikes if you can. They will find there own toys and leave the rest from home lying in the dirt. Bring hand wipes and plenty of paper towels. You will need them. For toddlers, bring a porta crib or a playpen for sleeping and playing. Let the kids get dirty and overlook dirty feet at night. They wouldn't die from a little dirt. Most important, use camping to teach them about nature, trees, bugs, squirrels, and most important poison oak or ivy. Let the kids be kids and have fun.

i would suggest that u chose somewhere safe first
learn how to use the tents u kno setting it up and all that
if u r campin anywhere near water unless the kids can swim i suggest u take floaters or something
have a first aid kit just in case take lots of bandages kidshave a reputation for gettin hurt
take towels shoes lots of warm wear nights could get cold dependin on where u r
um if u wanna get detailed take soaps and washing powder
take lots and lots of water in case
clothes of course
binoculars just for fun
find out 'bout how far away u r from people who could help in case of an emergency
and other neccesities{i.e toothbrush.....etc...}
and last of all but the most important don't let ur wat do u call it ur concern that u'll screw up and not manage show
try to not even feel it
i'm telling u from experience kids can sense tension and anxiety better than most adults
and of course pack in urself a lot of of self-confidence not too much though and try and feel like a kid again
b careful though and get a map of the area coz kids love to go explorin and altogether u might end up lost
have fun
whenever it is!!

took mine last year, they were 8 and 10 they loved it, me and the wife were the worried ones.
we only went for 2 days then a couple of overnighters.
i would not go to adventurous, keep it short, check the weather sites, dont bring anything you wont mind losing.
depending on your childrens ages i would let them run around (within reason) by themselves and with friends they meet and the big thing for my two was staying up late trying to scare each other with ghost stories.
enjoy them as they soon grow up.

Hi bekkibex,
You will definitely have your hands full, but here is a list that shoul help:
1. Food: choose basic meals that are easy to cook or can be brought with you: Snack examples: cereal bars, granola bars, cheerios, dried fruit, etc. and meal examples can include boxed foods like rice a roni, mac and cheese, ramen noodles. etc or food from a can like Chef Boyardee.
2. Supplies:
a. Bring a first aid kit.
b. Bring sunscreen and Off.
c. Bring some extra flashlights for the kids.
d. Make sure you bring plenty of water.
e. Bring baby wipes or hand wipes as these will help when cleaning the kids around dinner time.
f. Other general camping supplies. Without knowing more about your trip, it is hard to be specific here.
3. General Trips
a. If the kids are under 6, keep a close watch on the kids so they don't hurt themselves tripping over uneven ground or terrain they aren't used to.
b. Even if older than 6, have them use the buddy system when you are not present to reduce risk of danger.
c. Be sure to have some activities set aside specifically for them: go for hike in the woods with them, go fishing, go look for animal tracks, teach them how to build a fire, etc. If you keep them busy, they will enjoy the experience more and it will be easier on you as well.
d. Buy some glowsticks for the kids to play with at night. They will love them.
Hope this helps,
Jeff Marshall

just make sure you are close to places where you can go if it rains because sitting in a tent in the rain would be murder unless you are wasted at a festival
