There is a network of nearly 30 satellites in orbit that are fitted with transmitters on the atomic clock.. with at least 3 in line of site they constantly broadcast a signal that is timed when the GPS unit receives those signals..then with the satellites position and time measured the calculations locate your position by intersecting the three or more lines and giving Longitude and Latitude on the earths surface.
