Is A Gps Software Update The Same As A Map Update?

I have a hand me down GPS that told me the maps were older than a year. I registered the product with Garmin and it performed a free software update. Does that mean the maps were also updated or is that something different?

A firmware upgrade updates the s/w in the device. A map update is separate and may not be free.
