One way to do it cheap is to travel around in a car with a tent. Pitch your tent not on camping sites, but on farms or remote spots. Shower and wash in public swimming pools and eat food from the supermarket. Your only expenses for travelling this way will be food, petrol, entry to public swimming pools and to sights.
Pitching your tent informally is allowed in many countries in Europe, provided you disturb nobody and leave the next day. It is definitely allowed in Germany, Austria and Sweden.
In Italy it is only allowed if you are on private grounds and have permission by the owner. But then camping sites in Italy can be very cheap and you normally get the shower thrown in for free.
A decent, really rain-proof tent for 2 people is available from about 200 EUR on. Matress and sleeping bag will set you back another 120 EUR per person if you buy the lower end of branded stuff, unbranded from the supermarket can be around 50 EUR. If you sleep in the tent for 10 days for free you’ll have saved enough money on accomodation that the expense for all the camping gear was worth it.
