When preparing for a trip in the great outdoors the first piece of equipment the springs to mind is the waterproof jacket. It is the staple of any outdoor enthusiasts’ wardrobe and an essential piece of kit if you want to survive the British weather. There has been much technological advancement in waterproof jacket design and specification over the years. Prices and quality range widely as a result, from expensive high-spec specialist jackets, to the more affordable waterproof jacket for the casual explorer. Choosing a new waterproof jacket can be a struggle, in the murky world of Gore-Tex, layering and shells you can easily get lost. Here are a few jargon busting tips to help you decide which waterproof jacket best suits you:
- Waterproofing
There is no standard which needs to be met in order to call a jacket waterproof so beware of cheap waterproof jackets. The test of waterproofing, the column test, places a column on top of the fabric which is then filled with water to see how many feet of water can be repelled before the fabric is penetrated. Generally, 5 feet is enough but the best waterproof jackets can withstand over 10 feet.
- Breathability
As the body gives off moisture, it is important that the fabric lets this escape to avoid a build up. The difficulty is maintaining a waterproof fabric which is also breathable. This is achieved by a higher temperature and humidity within the jacket forces water out but not letting water in.
- Windproofing
Strong wind is uncomfortable but can also make you very cold. A jacket which can withstand 10 feet in the column test will be able to withstand high winds too.
It is therefore important to consider what you will use the jacket for. If you are a casual, sunny weather hiker then the main quality you will need is breathability, you will not need to spend large amounts of money on a highly waterproof jacket. Regatta clothing is widely accessible to the everyday hiker, providing quality jackets at affordable price. For the more devoted outdoor person, who will be outdoors all year round, a top quality waterproof jacket is vital. Berghaus and Craghoppers are devoted to developing the highest technology jackets and are pioneers in their field.
