I was hoping I could use my iPhone 3G when going off road as an actual hand held GPS device. Can it do that or must you be near a cell phone tower?

I dont know what happened, but ever since i got back from a camping trip…there is a straining pain coming from the middle of my right ribcage through the neck and down my right arm…
The only possibilities for the cause of this pain is sleeping on nothing but blankets in the tent….underneath me is a hard dirt ground.
I drank a lot of alcohol…but i dont know if this would be the cause either.
